Siberian Stars in a German Churchyard

The first day of Spring, and all the flowers of Spring seem to have erupted at once: daisies, celandine, crocuses, forsythia, cherry blossom. And here, in the churchyard of the Liebfrauenkirche (Church of Our Lady) in Jüterbog, we found a host of bright-blue sibirischer Blaustern, or Siberian blue-stars. (Scilla siberica).

In an ironic juxtaposition, the churchyard also sprouts a host of gravestones decorated with Soviet stars, marking the mortal remains of Red Army soldiers who liberated Jüterbog in April 1945.

Poignant though the Soviet graves are, I know which Russian stars I prefer.
