The Pilgrimage Church of Maria Gern - Berchtesgaden

In a high valley north of Berchtesgaden stands a delightful gem of a church, die Wallfahrtskirche (pilgrimage church) Maria Gern.

It dates from the 1600's and has a Gnadenbild (miraculous image of the Virgin Mary) on the high altar that has attracted pilgrims from those times onwards to today. The Virgin Mary statue is clothed in 24 different baroque costumes throughout the church year.

Whether you are a devout pilgrim yourself, or not at all interested in what Virgin Mary Barbie is wearing this week, there is no denying the spectacular location of the church, with Germany's third highest mountain the Watzmann massif to the South.
